On Wednesday, September 10th, I had the honor of speaking at Yale University, joining leading voices confronting the harsh realities of what is often called modern slavery in today’s global fashion supply chains. The event brought together a powerful panel moderated by Michelle Gabriel, Yale lecturer, with myself and Dr. Sanchita Banerjee Saxena, social scientist and Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) at UC Berkeley.
Together, we explored how exploitation continues to persist, why worker voices are frequently excluded from decision-making, and what systemic change is urgently needed both at corporate and policy levels.
During our discussion, I shared my perspective on the interconnected realities of migration and child labor, emphasizing that solutions must center survivor voices, address systemic inequalities, and create actionable pathways toward justice. I also offered guidance on what we, as engaged citizens and audience members, can do to help move the needle toward lasting change.
Awareness is only the first step true progress comes when we translate knowledge into concrete action, ensuring that the most vulnerable are seen, heard, and empowered.
